When is the Best Time to Go on Rwanda Safari Holidays?
The best time to visit Rwanda is during the dry seasons, which run from mid-December to early March and June to September.
These periods offer clearer trails for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, better visibility for game drives, and pleasant weather for travel.
The green season (March–May and October–November) brings lush scenery and fewer tourists.
While some trekking trails may be muddy, it’s a beautiful time for birdwatching and photography — and permits can be more readily available.
What Wildlife Can You See on Rwanda Safari Holidays?
Rwanda is one of the few places in the world where you can come face-to-face with critically endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. But beyond primates, Rwanda also offers traditional game viewing — with elephants, lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and more found in Akagera National Park, which has seen a remarkable wildlife recovery in recent years.
Rwanda is also a birder’s paradise, with over 700 species recorded, including colourful turacos, Albertine Rift endemics, and forest-dwelling raptors. In Nyungwe National Park, you can track chimpanzees, spot colobus monkeys, and walk along canopy trails through ancient montane forest.
Top Safari Destinations in Rwanda
Though compact, Rwanda’s national parks each offer a unique safari experience — from savannah game drives to rainforest primate tracking.
Volcanoes National Park
World-famous for its gorilla trekking, this park in the Virunga Mountains is home to around one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, offering a rare chance to observe these gentle giants up close in the misty forest.
Akagera National Park
In eastern Rwanda, Akagera is a classic savannah safari park, home to lions, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, and more. With lakes, grasslands, and wooded hills, it's the perfect complement to Rwanda’s primate reserves — and offers both boat and 4x4 game drives.
Nyungwe National Park
One of Africa’s oldest rainforests, Nyungwe is a lush, biodiverse wonderland. It’s known for chimpanzee trekking, over a dozen other primate species, and rare birdlife. The canopy walkway offers a unique way to explore the forest from above.
Gishwati–Mukura National Park
Rwanda’s newest national park, Gishwati–Mukura is a reforestation success story. It’s home to golden monkeys, chimpanzees, and beautiful forest trails — ideal for eco-conscious travellers interested in conservation.
